There are many types of lures for salmon, steelhead and walleye. Crankbait, spoons, flies, wool, and the list goes on. It is the fisherman's preference as to what he thinks works best, or what the next guy is using to catch all those whoppers.

The main things is, "catch a fish", don't you think? So, whatever works best for you, go for it. What do you use? My wife thinks the crankbait would win over spoons and flies. Whadya think?

A Day at the River

We dragged our butts out of bed early Tuesday morning in order to procure a spot on the river so as not to rub elbows with the next guy. This was futile, because there is always a bird earlier than you are... So we walked the dyke to our fave hole, eyed the available space and wiggled ourselves into a reasonably wide spot to wade in and start casting our little pieces of brightly coloured wool in hopes of "The Big One". We plunked, reeled, moved, plunked, and reeled some more, only to watch the "other" guy catch what should have been ours. Don't we always think that? Pretty soon, after several cell phone calls and guys saying things like, "Yes, honey, I'll be home soon. Oh? I missed her surgery? Okay, I'll be there real soon, Love ya, bye.", the hole thinned out enough for us to have considerable elbow room and have a better chance at putting dinner on the table. Our eyes following the backsides of the guys with the "big catch", we finally thought we had a chance. There were only 4 of us. Surely one of us would get the next. Well, the one guy next to us hooked a whale, immediately snapping his rod in half, at which time he hauled so hard on the line that he lost the fish. There was much debate under cover of hands over mouths about just exactly what happened, thinking the guy was so shocked and concerned about his broken fishing rod, he neglected to pay attention to what he was supposed to do with his fish. Poor sod. He immediately made a cell phone call to a friend to complain and assure himself that the rod was under warranty. So...we kept fishing, until we decided they - the chinook and coho - were deliberately avoiding us, knowing that if they grabbed our bait, they were a gonner. A beautiful day, a good lunch, and mighty fine fishin', even if we didn't go home with a fish. A pic of the guy who got one.

By the way, the guy hiding behind the guy with the big one, made us promise that we wouldn't tell anyone EXACTLY where this fave hole is on the river, we will honour his request, although, a dyke runs along the river, does that help you locate the spot? Guys are kinda funny about things like that...
